Any single painting medium offers a vast range of visual effects — but mixing media can result in a uniquely textured,
vibrantly varied work. Mixed media artists might combine various paints, collage, pencil sketches, printmaking, and photography.
Some artists even embed found objects such as toy parts or hardware into the surface of a mixed media work —
blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture in the process. Sometimes the artist chooses to make all the different
elements that make up a mixed media piece plainly visible; but then again, the artist might blend several media into a seamlessly integrated whole.
The possibilities are literally endless — but the goal in all cases is to create the unique combination of image, surface, texture, and color that
perfectly conveys the artist's intent.
The mixed media techniques I employed were a combination of hand made paper collage with charcoal and pastel drawings
and acrylic paint and glazes to seal in the surface. The hand made paper was created by Shawn McFarland at Magnolia Editions.
